Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to some of the most common questions about appointments, referrals, funding and how Chatter & Chomp support works.
-
Communication support is for babies and toddlers from birth to 2 years. Feeding support spans a broader range, from newborns through to early childhood. If you're unsure whether your child fits, please reach out and we will happily let you know.
-
Not at all. The first two years are when your child's brain is most open to learning, which makes early support both gentle and effective. This isn't about rushing your child's development, it's about supporting it in the right way, at the right time.
Reaching out early isn't an overreaction. It often means small, simple changes can make a meaningful difference, and it can ease the worry for you too. If you've been wondering, or waiting, that's completely okay. It's never too early to ask a question, and no concern is too small to bring along.
-
You don't need to wait until things feel “serious enough”. Many families reach out simply because something doesn't feel quite right, or because they'd like a little guidance. You don't need a diagnosis, or even a specific concern. If you're wondering, that's reason enough to get in touch.
-
That's completely okay, and more common than you might think. You don't need ongoing support to get value from speech pathology.
Many families book a single session just to talk through their questions and feel clearer about the next step. Our Meet Ups and Workshops are great options too, where you can ask questions and leave with practical ideas to try at home.
Wherever you're at, reach out and we'll find the right fit.
-
No referral is needed. You're welcome to get in touch directly through the enquiry form. If your child has been referred by a GP or paediatrician, that's welcome too. A referral is only needed if you'd like to access Medicare support, which your GP can arrange.
-
Once you've completed the enquiry form, we will be in touch within 2-3 business days to talk through your concerns and the best next step for your family. There's no pressure and no commitment, just a chance to work out whether we are the right fit.
-
The first session is relaxed and a chance for us to get to know you, your child, and what's been on your mind.
We'll talk through your concerns and your child's history, and spend time simply observing your child, often through play, feeding or general interaction. There's nothing your child needs to do or perform. We want to see them as they naturally are.
By the end, you'll have a clearer understanding of what's happening, and a sense of the next steps that feel right for your family. You're welcome to ask as many questions as you need, we are here to help.
-
Yes, always. With babies and toddlers, the most meaningful learning happens in the everyday moments between you and your child. My role is to coach and support you, sharing strategies you can carry into mealtimes, play and daily routines at home. Your presence is what turns a single session into lasting change, and it helps your child feel safe enough to engage and learn.
-
Our communication work is focused on the first two years, so we are not the right fit for older children. This isn't a reflection of your child, simply where our expertise sits. If you get in touch, we would be glad to point you toward a trusted colleague who would be a wonderful fit. Alternatively, you can search Speech Pathology Australia's Find a Speech Pathologist directory to find a certified practising speech pathologist near you.
-
Yes, and we believe it matters. With your consent, we work alongside GPs, paediatricians, lactation consultants, dietitians and others involved in your child's care, so everyone is working toward the same goals.
-
Unfortunately not. Chatter & Chomp can only support families who are self-managed or plan-managed through the NDIS. If you have questions about funding options or whether services are suitable for your child's plan, please get in touch.
